What We Believe

At First Methodist Church, San Angelo, our faith is centered on Jesus Christ and grounded in the truth of Scripture. As part of the Wesleyan tradition, we seek to know God, grow as disciples of Jesus Christ, and live out our faith through the power of the Holy Spirit.

God

We believe in the one true, holy, and living God—Creator, Sovereign, and Preserver of all things, visible and invisible.

God is infinite in power, wisdom, justice, goodness, and love. He graciously works for the well-being and salvation of humanity and for the glory of His name.

We believe the one God is revealed as the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—distinct yet inseparable, eternally one in essence and power.

Jesus Christ

We believe in Jesus Christ, truly God and truly man, in whom the divine and human natures are perfectly and inseparably united.

Jesus is the eternal Word made flesh, the only Son of the Father, born of the Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit. He lived among us as a servant, suffered and died on the cross, was buried, rose from the dead, and ascended into heaven.

We believe Christ will come again. He is our eternal Savior and Mediator, who intercedes for us and through whom humanity will be judged.

The Holy Spirit

We believe in the Holy Spirit, who is one in being with the Father and the Son.

The Holy Spirit reveals sin, righteousness, and judgment; leads people through the Gospel into the fellowship of the Church; and comforts, sustains, and empowers those who follow Christ.

Through the Holy Spirit, we are guided into truth and equipped to faithfully live out our calling as disciples of Jesus Christ.

The Holy Bible

We believe the Holy Bible, Old and New Testaments, reveals the Word of God as necessary for our salvation.

Through the Holy Spirit, Scripture is received as the true rule and guide for Christian faith and practice. Nothing that is not revealed in or established by Holy Scripture is to be required as an article of faith or taught as essential to salvation.

The Church

We believe the Christian Church is the community of all true believers under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

The Church exists to proclaim the Word of God, celebrate the sacraments, worship together, strengthen and equip believers, and participate in God’s redemptive work in the world.

Guided by the Holy Spirit, we are called to live in Christian community, grow as disciples, and share the love and grace of Jesus Christ with others.

Our Historic Faith

First Methodist Church affirms the historic Christian faith expressed in both the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed.

We invite you to explore what we believe, ask questions, and grow with us in your understanding of the Christian faith.

If you have questions about our beliefs or would like to visit with someone about your faith, we would be glad to connect you with one of our pastors.
